Is Marriage Still Honorable?

In the light, or rather, the darkness of recent events, I was drawn to consider the words of Hebrews 13:4. In that verse, the author of the epistle says, “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled.” Sadly, this no longer seems true. The opinions of men have been elevated over the purposes of God, and our society not only condones, but commends and commands the celebration of the irrational concept of homosexual “marriage.” We are in a sorry condition, and for Christians, it is a doubtful one.

There is reason to take heart, however. There is purpose in the apostle’s words. Marriage, as a creature of the state, is now broken. But before governments began to describe it, marriage was defined by the Lord from the beginning (Genesis 2:24). That is what is in view in Hebrews 13. For all the assaults on it, the human heart recognizes something divine in natural marriage. It is why so many people want to counterfeit it. But Christians, who know what it truly is and what it truly represents, need to commit to modeling it properly, now more than ever.

Father God, please be with the Christian husbands and wives in this nation, and throughout the world. So much is against them, and what is sacred is being cast to dogs. Help them find their strength in you, and rely on you to be examples of the love you give. I hope they take the challenge of this time as a chance to shine for you, not to lose hope. And let those with a distorted concept of love, those who put their selfish lusts above the truths of your goodness, see in Christian couples the blessing that can only come through devotion to you.  Your ideal of marriage will always be attractive. Help your sons and daughters live that ideal, so people might be drawn to it. Then, may they be drawn on to you through your Son, Jesus Christ, whose love for us marriage reflects, and who alone can give them the fulfillment they seek. It is in His name I pray. Amen.
